Since the
mid-1990’s I’ve sewn fleece hats, mittens and other accessories. The by-product
of this ongoing enterprise results in nearly 20 years of small-scale scraps. The 2004 genesis of the Gizzlegorp
originated from a few fleece caps gone awry, mis-fitting mittens, and first
attempts at hats with ears.
As a child (and adult) I called the audible gurgling and bubbling a gizzlegorp. This took on a visual component when I started to sew with the fleece fragments. Like the sounds, each sculpture is unique. From fabric morsels, I sort, pair and sew larger structures, like three-dimensional crazy quilts. I enjoy the visual metaphor and gestures towards Petri-dish mishaps and morsels, genetically altered and spawned plants and animals, and the possibilities of an imaginary fleece-able kingdom.
